Now that the new slippers are done....

....i can retire my (felted) space boots (see here; while they were the warmest slippers i've ever worn, i still wore holes in the bottoms since they did not have leather soles.
So I've cut hearts out of them and Eily is having fun making garland.

Modified

I redid the slippers, shortening the foot area and lengthening the ankle. Crochet really allows you to modify however you wish as you stitch along.

This video helped:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8m3JM-xyQXc&feature=youtube_gdata_player

It gave me an idea of how to start stitching the wool (which is unspun roving) to the soles. Then i double chained four rows around, then single chained just along the front of the slipper (a half moon shape). And continued back and forth in that area with single chain, skipping a few stitches every so often to decrease (did i mention i know very little about the rules of crochet?). Once the top area of the foot was done, i began to stitch around the ankle (double chaining now) until the height i desired.

I love it that I finally figured out the crochet stitch on none other than a toilet roll cover. It's actually a sleeve. And it's made from twine, so really not what you think of when you imagine a toilet roll cover. see http://tomakeaday.blogspot.com/2010/05/to-hook-or-hook.html for previous crochet attempts. and think of plastic bag strips for previous crochet disasters. goodness.

to hook or hook

the crochet idea wasn't giving me what i was looking for - too thick for showing detail - and so i'm thinking abour rug hooking now. not for sale goods, unless small cards. instead, i'm dreaming about a bedside floor rug.

no pictures, just joy

While Brett was having dinner with Stuart McLean on Pelee Island, Eily and I were busy converting the 36 inch floor loom (found in someone's garbage pile!) so that it is able to weave wool rag rugs both warp and weft. I have been wanting to do this for sooo long, and still need some more parts. I thought I could use the seams that I cut out of sweaters, but I decided to crochet with them instead. Another breakthrough craft moment which allows me to a.) destash b.) add a new product line...my goodness, yet another? c.) learn to crochet (which has somehow evaded me this long) and d.) still be thrifty. I love it! I'm clam happy and I can't even take a picture because B has the camera for birding and Stuarting.
