Lacework

I tried (and retried many many times!) lace knitting. The pattern i was following had lovely chains of bay leaves but they got lost because of the multi-coloured handspun mohair i was using. It was good lacework practice but the end result is airy and textured but patternless.

Another hat mishap

This one is almost as good as the last one. First off, it was a Christmas gift. Well, you might be aware that it's nearly February. Secondly, i delayed in buying an additional ball of wool until after i started decreasing. I thought i could do it with one...at $18/ball i wish i had. Too late (aka stubborn) to go back i continued with 2 inches in single ribbing rather than the double i'd done so far.
After it all, the hat really didn't fit the recipient well and i'm resigned to keeping it. At least when i'm wearing it i can't see the mistakes as well as if Brett was.
(And i thought ribbing would avoid sizing the concerns of a felted one)

Now that the new slippers are done....

....i can retire my (felted) space boots (see here; while they were the warmest slippers i've ever worn, i still wore holes in the bottoms since they did not have leather soles.
So I've cut hearts out of them and Eily is having fun making garland.

a felting day

...which turned into more of a felting sejour. i used this pattern, but i am ready to tweak it the next time since the extra allowance for shrinkage was much to generous (or perhaps my feet size is much too generous) and i ended up with both feet too large and one foot even larger. the seams as well must be improved next time around. however, after much felting, then more felting, then a bit more, the slippers are warm and wearable. and adorned with one of jennifer's christmas gifts: a elk bone button.

my winter quest

this winter i've dedicated some time (and let's face it, money) to getting and keeping myself warm. recently, i realized that my circulatory system is a bit of a slacker. clearly, not everyone has to wear longjohns from november to march. and i'm still cold.
to up the ante, i've been trying to wear a wool layer against the skin. or sometimes silk, which has been a little harder to acquire second-hand. i'm also a little curious about fleece as a top layer. but when i couldn't find thick fleece pants, i bought some polartec 300 material, the warmest fleece i could find, from an outdoor fabric store in seattle. yesterday, i made them into pants and passed out at 9pm probably from overheating.

The advent calendar is done. Although the pockets are not yet stuffed. I have a feeling Eily would have trouble emptying just one at a time.

I've also sewn together a felt floor basket from a fabulous ultra-felted sweater that was donated to me. I've been wearing the sleeves as legwarmers for weeks, since from the moment I tried them on on a whim, I could barely take them off. They're ultra warm. Now me and the yarn holder match.
